We’ve put together this page to provide a summary—with links and other helpful details—of government services and public resources available to the Burnt Mills community, and in the nearby surroundings.

Note: Distances listed below are approximate, based on driving directions from the intersection of US-29 (Colesville Road/Columbia Pike) and Burnt Mills Avenue.

Trash & Recycling

  • County-provided weekly pickups are Wednesday mornings, except for certain holiday weeks that slide to Thursday
  • Household recyclables are collected in separate containers for paper, glass/plastic, and yard trim
  • Residents are allowed up to five bulk trash pickups a year
  • Drop-offs of trash, recycling, and hazardous materials can be made directly at the county’s Shady Grove Transfer Station in Derwood, MD (16.5 miles)

Public Schools

The Burnt Mills neighborhood is part of Montgomery County’s Northeast Consortium (NEC) of feeder schools, with three high school options families can request via a lottery process.

Libraries

  • White Oak Library (1.3 miles)
    Highlights: Baby, toddler, and preschool story times; three book clubs for adults; small and large rooms available to reserve; many monthly events.
    Open Monday to Thursday: 10 am–8 pm; Friday to Sunday: 10 am–6 pm

Public transportation services in Montgomery County include local bus provided by RideOn as well as WMATA MetroBus and MetroRail, MetroAccess, MARC trains, and commuter bus lines. The county also operates a specialized transportation service, Call ‘n’ Ride, for the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Bus Lines
These bus lines serve the Burnt MIlls Community with stops in both directions on US-29, within 0.5 miles of Burnt Mills Avenue. All southbound buses terminate at the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center, adjacent to the Silver Spring Metro station.

Montgomery County Recreation Centers
All County Recreation Centers offer free center membership passes for residents through 2024. Each center offers a variety of social and fitness activities for children, adults, and seniors (55+), year-round, both indoors and out.

Pools

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Aquatic Center (2.3 miles)
    A county-managed aquatic recreation center with both a year-round indoor swim center and a summer-only outdoor pool. A variety of passes are available for purchase, with discounts for county residents.
  • Northwest Branch Pool (0.4 miles)
    A small private pool club offering a competitive swim team and other family recreation activities. Membership is currently at capacity with a wait list of approximately two years.

Parks & Trails
Montgomery County manages dozens of parks (large and small) and an extensive network of trails which provide endless outdoor recreation opportunities for its residents and visitors.

  • Northwest Branch Stream Valley Parks (Access to trail available from 200-block of Burnt Mills Ave.)
    Several multi-use trails that run along both sides of the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia.
  • Brookside Gardens (5.6 miles)
    50-acres of public gardens within Wheaton Regional Park which include an Azalea Garden, a Butterfly Garden, a Fragrance Garden, a Perennial Garden, a Rose Garden, a Japanese Style Garden, and a Woodland Walk. There are also two conservatories for year-round enjoyment. Admission to the gardens is free.
